Though JAIL has become a subject of the Hindi films after a long time when Madhur Bhandarkar has tried to focus attention on it, JAIL has indeed been an integral part of the Hindi films right from the time when Hindi cinema started making waves. For that matter even in the advertisements as well, JAIL has been used as a subject, underlining the subconscious association of JAIL with our psyche. After all, JAIL has been an integral part of our freedom struggle and there would be a family that does not have an association with the jail.
JAIL indeed provides an opportunity to have a trip down the memory lane.

AWAARA | AWAARA:
The first film that comes to mind where JAIL has played an integral role is in AWAARA where it has been used as a reformist symbol. Reform of Raj Kapoor in the film indeed starts after he goes to JAIL.

SHAHEED | SHAHEED:
Manoj Kumar's SHAHEED was probably one of the first films which was extensively shot in the JAIL and it was able to bring out in distinct relief the trials and tribulations that our freedom fighters faced and endured to free our country.

DO AANKHEIN BARAH HAATH | DO AANKHEIN BARAH HAATH:
V. Shantaram was the first director who thought about reforms in the criminal system and whole film was experimentation about it. Kiran Bedi must have got some inspiration from this film to introduce the reforms in Jails when she became in-charge of Tihar Jail in Delhi.

BANDINI | BANDINI:
Nutan established her authority as an actor par excellence with this film and it was the first side that brought out in tragic detail the manner in which a female prisoner is dealt with in the JAIL.

SHOLAY | SHOLAY:
Who can forget the magical moments that were created in the JAIL in SHOLAY. As a matter of fact the scenes that were shot in the JAIL in SHOLAY became all time great scenes in the world of Hindi cinema.

KAALIA | KAALIA:
Amitabh Bachchan's magnum opus was probably the first film where the struggle for supremacy between a criminal and a Superintendent of the Jail was brought out in distinct relief. The chemistry that Amitabh Bachchan and Pran had started with ZANJEER went on to a totally different orbit through this film.

ANDAR BAAHAR | ANDAR BAAHAR:
Romu Sippy's film starring Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor was also a film where the comic side of the time spent in the JAIL was underlined. It was a fast-paced film but could not have the same success at the box office.

GUMRAAH | GUMRAAH:
Sanjay Dutt Sri Devi starer GUMRAAH was the second film that brought out the trials and tribulations that a female star has to undergo inside the JAIL, right from resisting sexual advances to other torments.

ANJAAM | ANJAAM:
Madhuri Dixit starrer ANJAAM was another film which tried to cast focus on the manner in which a female prisoner is treated inside the JAIL, more so, if she is expecting a child.
Jails have indeed been happy ground for the Hindi film makers and it is hoped that it would turn out the same for Madhur Bhandarkar as well.
