Lyrics of Hindi films have indeed traveled a long distance and are reflective of the mood of the nation about the importance of longevity of romance in the life of an individual. Ishq as we grew up with had all the sweetness and elfin flow of honey while the lyrics of today, here one is talking about the lyrics that capture the imagination of the listeners, is like hot pop-corn which when loosing its hotness become so rubberized that it has to be spewed out.
A Raj Kumar was ready to spend his life remembering about a foot, and the moments: as he had said to Meena Kumari in PAKEEZA; "Aapke Paon Dekhe bade Khubsoorat hain, inhe zamin par mat utariega", now switch back to the present times, where the lyrics spouse the SMS type romances and also encourage flipping from one partner to another till one is able to find a soul-mate, and even after soul-mate is found, one need not hang on to the same for eternity. Love which at one time was a gift to the mankind from God has indeed become a trophy for which all the myriad tools of negotiation are utilized. The result is if there are three friends who have developed interest in one girl, all three of them could try their hand at one girl as is being seen in series of films of the present times, and the latest avatar of this kind is DHOL. Could it be also to do with the fact that, with time being a prized commodity in the present times, it is sought to be utilized in an optimum manner.
As a corollary of this change, now the friends do not fall out of each other when every one of them has fallen for a girl, and do not sulk, as it used to happen in the past and celebrated examples are SANAGAM, ARZOO etc. The change in perspective of this variety has also given a soft dismissal to two hero one heroine theme as well. What this has also meant is that now the song writers are not provided with an opportunity to pen the lyrics conveying the pangs of separation. When it was last done during the last two-three years would be a very difficult proposition to recollect.
Who would have thought that a Rishi Kapoor who sang one of the most beautiful songs in the Hindi films would also sing a "Towel Mein Baahar jaoigi to halla much jayega" to off all the actresses Juhi Chawla, or that an Akshay Kumar would sing, a song "SUSU AA Gaya". This kind of lyrics when they pass the muster and see the light of the day invariably are able to do so either because the hero and heroine are on the way out or are trying to carve a place for themselves in the sun.
During the old times the films which were made by the filmmakers could also become a hit because of the beautiful lyrics that they had and films like PAARASMANI, DOSTI etc., are sublime examples of these kind, and on the other hand are the lyrics, "Line maar le re baba line maar le", and "Excuse me Kya re", which tried to establish relatively new actors through bawdiness as the USP.
With the ready to eat variety options available in myriad propositions, and having been accustomed to micro wave eating by heating and reheating the product the taste of a mouthwatering product the senses seem to have forgotten, and that is the reason why when a lyrics of the unconventional kind arrives, as it did in RANG DE BASANTI, it does make the audience sit up and savor it.
