In times of strife, Hindi films provide the balm

The Government of Pakistan has now accorded the official sanction to what was being carried on in the soil of Pakistan in a very clandestine manner, the screening of Hindi films. Finally the Government of Pakistan has decided to allow the Hindi films to be distributed officially in various cinema halls across Pakistan and this is recognition of the fact that the Hindi film industry and the Hindi films are indeed the organic links between these two nations which experienced fault lines owing to the political compulsions. It is also recognition about the fact that the heart that beats inside both these nations is indeed the same.

While the number of films allowed to be shown in the cinema halls across Pakistan in being restricted to twelve, it indeed is an ominous beginning. The viewing of films from a different brings in a new idea and awareness about the adoption of various tools of technology to enhance the experience of cinema viewing. The cinema of Pakistan is still on a lower keel when it is compared with what has been achieved by the Hindi films. The way Hindi films have benefited from exposure to various Hollywood films, same can be expected for films made in Pakistan and they could view with the films made in Hindi films to compete for audience in the Indian Territory as well.

Hindi films have the amazing ability to soothe the frayed nerves, as the magic of entertainment on the silver screen tends to mitigate the woes of the daily life. By the decision to allow the exhibition of Hindi films officially, probably the Government of Pakistan could be able to obtain for its country some amount of peace in the country. This may sound far-fetched and utopian for the time being, but this is the outreach that cinema has for itself.

The souls of Prithvi Raj Kapoor and Balraj Sahni along with most of the other stalwarts of the Hindi film industry who came from Pakistan and made their mark in Bollywood, but always hankered to go back to Pakistan must be giving blessing from the heavens above for this initiative by the government of Pakistan. This could also open the way for shooting in Pakistan and the cultural exchange that would then ensure could benefit everybody on both the sides of the border.
