Mithun Chakraborty instead of launching his son on his own decided to have faith on one of his favorite directors, Raj N Sippy to deliver the same for his son Mimoh, who is making his debut under Raj N Sippy's baton in JIMMY. Mithun seems to be following in the leak of the debuts made by Kajol, or Abhishek Bachchan, who were launched by directors Rahul Rawail and J P Dutta respectively. The choice of Raj N Sippy as the director to launch Mimoh through JIMMY seems to be guided by the fact that Raj Sippy has given Mithun one of the path breaking hits which is considered the landmark in Mithun's career, the film being BOXER, then AMANAT that cemented his position as a dancing star.
Mimoh has an interesting launch, as he is being launched through a film that is being projected as a dance film and by choosing dance as the channel vehicle there seems to be an attempt to invoke the nostalgia of dance associated with Mithun and to bring audience into the theatre in the first instance.
Raj Sippy has been known to direct major watershed films in his career, right from MERE APNE, to KOSHISH, to ACHANAK, to INKAAR, SATTE PE SATTA, SADMA, SATYAMEVE JAYTE, THANEDAAR etc. In all these films one novelty or the other either in the form of subject matter of the film, or the slick cinematography or a new avatar for the star under question has been the key element. Raj Sippy is the master of mystery and he thrives on the same.
For JIMMY not much publicity has been done, and the intention seems to be that let the film speak for itself through its action and the dance of Mimoh. It is after a long time that Raj Sippy is returning to mainstream, as his previous films during the last few years have not made much mark, but as JIMMY seems to be a slick thriller it should turn out to be another turning point in his career.
Time would ultimately decide as to whether Hindi cinema would get another dancing star, the theme of the film seems to have some parallels with Govinda's first film, ILZAAM where element of crime was woven into dance, but the difference lies in the fact that there were strong character actors in ILZAAM which are not there in JIMMY. Could Mithun have been picked up to play one of the characters?
