While NEW YORK has emerged as the first genuine hit of the year 2009, it has also reaffirmed the traditional Indian theme of Hindi films in a very subtle manner; it being that though there might be two boys and a girl, the second boy would be a silent lover of the girl, and he would prove his love by offering himself for sacrifice to protect the family of his beloved. May be, this transition is owing to the kind of the subject that has been picked up, but the nature of sacrificial role that Neil Nitin Mukesh has enacted in NEW YORK has subtle underpinnings.

With the change in the backdrop and the treatment of the subject, the fundamentals associated with two boys one girl have been brought out in a very distinct manner. Another reason why NEW YORK has emerged as a hit is owing to the fact that there are sympathetic associations with it by the Indian people, in particular through the Mumbai Bomb blast as also the attack on the Oberoi Hotels.

The critics may not be appreciative about dwelling on a subject that has become historic, i.e. the NEW YORK bombing, but the fact of the matter is that when a subject becomes historic then treating it from a dispassionate angle is rather an easy job. It is also refreshing approach that a community based on its color that is staring the barrel of the gun owing to preconceived notions is trying to contextualize the matter from its perspective.

For Neil Nitin Mukesh the success of NEW YORK came as an encore as the ambience for it was created by Salman Khan's show DUS Ka Dum, whereby whole country side was able to know what a natural born talent Neil Nitin Mukesh had. As a matter of fact the kind of publicity that he garnered through this show was much better than what he could accumulate for himself either through JOHNNY GADDAR or BACHNA AE HASEENO.

NEW YORK has proved that if a new treatment to the subject is given audience is receptive to it in a big way.
