MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA is one more addition into the genre of extra-marital affairs, as it is slowly becoming an accepted social reality. Lots of expectation was built into the movie for the fact that it would be able to give a refreshing perspective to the issue of extra-marital affairs. But maybe, even though it is becoming a social reality, the mainstream stars chosen to enact the role do not want to let their conventional image with the public undergo a change for a subject that has an element of taboo associated with it.

So there would be a lot of hum and ho, but ultimately, things would gravitate to being good in the end, forgive and forget. It also has a gendered notion associated with it, woman erring, so has to listen to sermons, and then in the end, things are back to square one. The moot point is how it is accepted that when a marital discord has developed, it would change by forgiving and forgetting. So, the films languish between here and there, and it becomes a problem area. MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA seems to be hanging in that nowhere zone. Kareena Kapoor though has been able to bring out a refreshing candor in interpreting the existentialist dilemma of a modern woman of India in the present times. May be, if it had provided a suggestion to walk out and not meekly surrender, MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA could have been a more successful film.

The notion of work life existentialist dilemma was presented in a candid manner by Mahesh Bhat when he made ARTH. But when it was made, i.e. way back in the early eighties, it was way ahead of its time. As a matter of fact time has indeed come for ARTH to be remade factoring in the modern realities and it could turn out to be a valuable addition to the genre. In the same category was Yash Chopra's film DOOSRA AADMI which was also way ahead of its times. Who would have thought that a Yash Chopra would visit the subject, but he did and gave Sagar Sarhadi the baton to direct the film. DOOSRA AADMI was also an interesting addition to this oeuvre. Interestingly enough, it is mostly the world of creativity, where these kinds of situations develop in the film world. It could also be owing to the fact that in the world of creativity the inspirations keep on popping up, or there is an eternal search to find out a creative soul-mate, who could understand the creative urges, that a wife or a husband may not be able to understand or ponder over between themselves, so the world of creativity is replete with examples of these kinds delving into this realm. MAIN AURR MRS. KHANNA would indeed provide a further food for thought on this topic and more such interpretations with a difference nuance could indeed come in the near future.
