Next Friday will see Ram Gopal Varma's 30 crore (as per the maker himself) tribute to SHOLAY, RAM GOPAL VARMA KI AAG. The movie featuring some of the biggest names of the country like Amitabh Bachchan, Mohanlal, Ajay Devgan and Sushmita Sen, is expected to take a good start at B & C centres and also at single screens and the makers have distributed the prints accordingly.

Giving company to RAM GOPAL VARMA KI AAG will be Anant Mahadevan's remake of the runaway hit from the 70s, VICTORIA NO. 203. Interesting to note here that the old VICTORIA NO. 203 was made by Brij Sadanah, the father of the present producer of the remake, Kamal Sadanah. With poor publicity and negligible hype, the movie is likely to take a poor start.

The third release of 31st August will be Pooja Bhatt's DHOKHA. Normally the Bhatt camp movies bank heavily on popular and good music but this time around DHOKHA lacks in that department. Needless to say that DHOKHA can at best hope for a fair start.

We must add here that the previous releases like CHAKDE! INDIA (with tax-exemptions starting to come in) and last Friday's HEYY BABYY will once again give the new releases a tough competition, as they are still very strong.

Coming to the new releases, Sajid Nadiadwala's Akshay, Fardeen, Riteish and Vidya starrer, HEYY BABYY, had a good start at the box-office, both in India and Overseas. Released at 86 cinemas of Bombay-Thane, the movie saw a good opening. Outside of Bombay, HEYY BABYY had good start in Delhi, East Punjab, C.I. and C.P. Berar. The movie embarked on a very good start in Rajasthan but was below the mark in U.P., though as the weekend progressed it picked up there also. HEYY BABYY will work best in big cities and multiplexes, which in a way will work for its benefit, as it is an expensive film. Even in the Overseas, the Sajid Khan directed movie had an excellent weekend in the US, grossing $612,486 and was good in UK with £228,761.

Smita Thackeray's well made KAISAY KAHEIN... was no match for HEYY BABYY and also a week old CHAKDE! INDIA. With the opening ranging from dull to poor, KAISAY KAHEIN... is a total loss.

From the earlier releases, MARIGOLD turns out to be a disaster. The dubbed version of the Salman Khan-Ali Larter starrer is a disaster and collected 5.60 lakhs from Bombay, 5 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 7.75 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.75 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.25 lakhs from Faridabad and 1 lakh each from Nagpur and Indore. The original English version of MARIGOLD is also poor and it collected 10.70 crores from Bombay, 1.35 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.60 lakhs from Lucknow, 6.90 lakhs from Calcutta and 6.30 lakhs from Hyderabad. The total net collections for both the versions of MARIGOLD is less than 1.50 crores from India, during the first week and the movie is a washout (in India) and a flop in the Overseas.

Rahul Rawail's Rakhi Sawant starrer, BUDDHA MAR GAYA, proved to be a dead horse on arrival! The movie collected 61 lakhs from Bombay, 16.30 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 21.50 lakhs from Delhi city, 3 lakhs from Faridabad, 1 lakh each from Ghaziabad and Lucknow, 4.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.40 lakhs from Indore, 4 lakhs from Jaipur, 4.15 lakhs from Calcutta and 7.50 lakhs from Hyderabad. In its first week, BUDDHA MAR GAYA collected 2.75 crores from India and is a losing venture for all its distributors.

Coming to Yash Raj's Shah Rukh Khan-Vidya Malvade starrer, CHAKDE! INDIA, the movie is still super strong overall and rock-steady in big cities. During the second week, CHAKDE! INDIA collected 3.61 crores from Bombay, 64 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.60 lakhs from Valsad, 5.60 lakhs from Rajkot, 3.60 lakhs from Jamnagar, 2.25 lakhs (gross) from Bhavnagar, 2 lakhs from Solapur, 7.80 lakhs from Nasik, 2.15 crores from Delhi city, 40.85 lakhs from Gurgaon, 15.75 lakhs from Faridabad, 34.40 lakhs from Noida, 11.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3.80 lakhs from Kanpur, 17.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 2.50 lakhs from Agra, 1.70 lakhs from Bareilly, 3.20 lakhs from Aligarh, 16.65 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.70 lakhs from Amravati, 1.35 lakhs from Akola, 3.10 lakhs from Raipur, 2.10 lakhs from Bhilai, 4.50 lakhs from Bhopal, 19 lakhs from Indore, 23 lakhs from Jaipur, 2.50 lakhs from Ajmer, 2.30 lakhs from Guwahati, 52.50 lakhs from Calcutta, 3.10 lakhs from Aurangabad and 53.90 lakhs from Hyderabad. In its second week, CHAKDE! INDIA collected another 15.50 crores, for a two week all-India total of 35.75 crores. Undoubtedly, CHAKDE! INDIA is now in the hit plus category and will surely move to a higher status in the weeks to come. The movie is also making amends for its slow Overseas start and has so far grossed $926,120 from the US and £ 385,146 from UK. It is now apparent that CHAKDE! INDIA is also becoming a success in the Overseas though not as big as the usual Shah Rukh Khan song-and-dance and Raj/Rahul ventures!

The movies which released with CHAKDE! INDIA, namely THE BLUE UMBRELLA and KAAFILA, failed to reverse their flop / disaster status, during the second week. While THE BLUE UMBRELLA added another 10 lakhs to get to 50 lakhs, KAAFILA collected 50 lakhs, taking its total nett from India to 3.50 crores.

Movies may come and movies may go, but it seems like David Dhawan's Govinda, Salman, Lara and Katrina starrer PARTNER will go on and on! Even in its fifth week, PARTNER collected 32 lakhs from Bombay, 8.75 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.65 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.40 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1.30 lakhs from Solapur, 15.30 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.20 lakhs from Faridabad, 2 lakhs each from Noida and Ghaziabad, 1.35 lakhs from Kanpur, 4.70 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.60 lakhs from Nagpur, 1 lakh from Jabalpur, 1.70 lakhs from Amravati, 1.40 lakhs from Indore, 3.15 lakhs from Jaipur and 9.25 lakhs from Hyderabad. During the week, PARTNER added another 1.75 crores for a five week all-India total of 61 crores. The movie is now a blockbuster hit. In the Overseas, PARTNER has grossed £ 822,630 from UK and $1,062,840 from the US and is a good hit.
