Bollywood box-office report of the week

With the 'Shraadh' ('Pitri Paksh') period starting from 27th September and the 'ramzaan' month still on, no significant movie is slated to release this Friday. Its just two small projects, CHHODON NAA YAAR and ITS BREAKING NEWS, before the biggies hit the screens from next Friday. None of the two releases is expected to achieve anything at the ticket window.
Last week's JOHNNY GADDAAR got good reviews but was off to a weak/dull opening in Bombay and the start was poor almost everywhere. Despite its merits, JOHNNY GADDAAR is expected to find the going tough at the box-office, given its weak start. The other release of the week, DIL DOSTI ETC. had a dull start in Bombay and the opening was fair at places but dull otherwise. DIL DOSTI ETC. may be a realistic drama but the reality at the box-office will not be a happy tale, except for a few cities where it will do average business. The movie should do relatively better in Delhi-U.P., because of the local flavour.
It cost Percept Pictures 8 crores to make DHOL and the medium budget movie fared best in Delhi-U.P. but was average to below average in circuits like Bombay, C.P Berar, C.I. and Nizam. In the first week, the Priyadarshan directed film collected 1.45 crores from Bombay, 50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3 lakhs from Baroda, 2.40 lakhs from Mehsana, 1.1 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 1.20 lakhs from Palanpur, 1.30 lakhs from Patan, 6.80 lakhs from Rajkot, 3.20 lakhs from Jamnagar, 3.65 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 2 lakhs from Gandhidham, 1.90 lakhs from Solapur, 5 lakhs from Nasik, 1.10 crores from Delhi city, 19.30 lakhs from Gurgaon, 11.60 lakhs from Faridabad, 15.70 lakhs from Noida, 9 lakhs from Kaushambi, 5.55 lakhs from Kanpur, 11.75 lakhs from Lucknow, 2.25 lakhs from Agra, 1.45 lakhs from Bareilly, 1.20 lakhs from Jabalpur, 1.15 lakhs from Akola, 1.85 lakhs from Raipur, 1.25 lakhs from Chandrapur, 10.15 lakhs from Indore, 1.05 lakhs from Sehore, 1 lakh from Bhopal, 1.85 lakhs from Bikaner, 3.80 lakhs (gross) from Ajmer, 28 lakhs from Calcutta, 3.10 lakhs from Aurangabad, 2.70 lakhs from Latur and 16.25 lakhs from Hyderabad. In its first week, the Tusshar, Kunal Khemu, Sharman, Rajpal and Tanushree starrer managed to nett a decent 10 crores from India and will be an earner for most of its distributors barring those in South. DHOL has failed in the UK, grossing just $72,148.
The other release, MANORAMA SIX FEET UNDER, has poor collections to show. In the first week, the movie collected 13 lakhs from Bombay, 1.40 lakhs from Ahmedabad 2.70 lakhs from Delhi city, 1 lakh from Gurgaon, 1.80 lakhs from Noida, and 2.21 lakhs from Hyderabad. With barely 35 lakhs in its first week from India, MANORAMA SIX FEET UNDER is a trade disaster.
The last release of the same week, LOINS OF PUNJAB, could not show results despite appreciation. In its first week the movie collected 25 lakhs from Bombay, 1.85 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.50 lakhs from Pune, 14.35 lakhs from Delhi city, 4.65 lakhs from Gurgaon, 3.75 lakhs from Noida, and 2.50 lakhs from Hyderabad. LOINS OF PUNJAB could barely nett around a crore from India and despite its shoestring budget and limited release; it is likely to fail at the box-office.
Meanwhile DHAMAAL continues its surprisingly good run for a lean month! In the third week, the Indra Kumar directed Dutt, Arshad, Riteish, Jaaved and Aashish starrer collected 79 lakhs from Bombay, 20.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.51 lakhs from Rajkot, 2.10 lakhs Jamnagar, 1.30 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.05 lakhs from Gandhidham, 1.80 lakhs from Nasik, 30.35 lakhs from Delhi city, 8.30 lakhs from Gurgaon, 3.10 lakhs from Faridabad, 7.50 lakhs from Noida, 4.10 lakhs from Kaushambi, 1.1 lakhs each from Kanpur and Aligarh, 6.80 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.70 lakhs from Agra, 4.40 lakhs from Indore, 1 lakh from Ajmer, and 4.45 lakhs from Hyderabad. During the week, DHAMAAL netted another 3.50 crores, for an all-India total of nearly 26 crores in three weeks and the movie is a hit in Bombay and overall a semi-hit in India. The movie is an average in the UK with $451,097.
Sajid Nadiadwala's Akshay, Fardeen, Riteish and Vidya starrer, HEYY BABYY sees another earning week, though on the lower side. In its fifth week, the movie collected 12.50 lakhs from Bombay, 3.16 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 5.50 lakhs from Delhi city, 2.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.90 lakhs from Noida, 1 lakhs from Kaushambi, 1.85 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.25 lakhs from Agra, 1.20 lakhs from Aurangabad and 2.15 lakhs from Hyderabad. The movie netted 75 lakhs for an all-India total of 51 crores in five weeks. The Sajid Khan directed movie is a superhit in India. In the Overseas, HEYY BABYY has grossed $1,382,988 from UK and $1,443,521 from the US and is a good hit there.
Coming to Yash Raj's CHAK DE! INDIA, the movie entered the 50th day of it uninterrupted run, last Friday, and continues to get good collections. In its seventh week, the movie collected 36 lakhs from Bombay, 3.10 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 26.65 lakhs from Delhi city, 4.10 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2.10 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.15 lakhs from Noida, 1 lakhs from Kaushambi, 1.10 lakhs from Kanpur, 1.75 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.15 lakhs from Agra, 3.60 lakhs from Indore, 2.10 lakhs from Bhopal, 9.55 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.70 lakhs from Aurangabad and 12.55 lakhs from Hyderabad. During the current week, the Shah Rukh Khan-Vidya Malvade starrer, CHAK DE! INDIA netted another 1.90 crores, for an all-India total of 60.40 crores in seven weeks. Given the fact that CHAK DE! INDIA has a budget of 18-20 crores and that Yash Raj is also the worldwide distributors, the movie is a blockbuster hit in India. CHAK DE! INDIA is also a hit in the Overseas, grossing $1,120,404 from the US and $867,265 from UK.
