Kunal Khemu is enjoying his time under the sun as the biggest hit till date in his career so far, 99, has held on tremendously well at theaters all over. In its three week run, the film has now crossed the 10 crore mark and is already sitting pretty at a total of 11 crores.
In its third week, the film has fallen by a mere 20% (excellent), hence turning out to be one of the most stable films of 2009, whether released before or after the strike. With 2.5 crores coming in it's third week, 99 has made a tremendous progress at the box office considering the fact that it had opened below par on it's first weekend and mainly saw a push due to very good word of mouth, especially in metros.
CHECK OUT: Soha and Kunal caught red handed...
Comments a trade insider, ''Let's not take it away from 99 that it is one of the very few successes that Bollywood has seen so far. In fact after 13B, this is the only film that has got some smiles back for exhibitors, distributors and audiences. To think of it, neither Madhavan nor Kunal are box office stars per se but look at the way they have chosen quality films which have worked so well in spite of their medium budget.''
Though some random tongues are wagging while attributing the success of 99 to lack of any other films in theaters, the fact remains that even during the strike more than a dozen odd films had released (mostly small and unknown) but it was only 99 that managed to strike rich.
With the current week being yet another open house before biggies start arriving from 12th June onwards, it is time for 99 to continue its successful run.
