Awarapan 2 continues to perform well at the Indian box office, although the film witnessed a major drop in collections during its third weekend. The Emraan Hashmi starrer collected Rs. 3.50 crore over the weekend, recording an 80 per cent drop compared with the previous weekend.
The film also received support from a Buy One Get One offer during the weekend. However, the offer did not lead to a major jump in collections, with the movie earning Rs. 3.50 crore during the three day period.
Despite the drop, Awarapan 2 has already entered the final stage of its theatrical run. The romantic action drama has collected Rs. 143.75 crore nett in India so far. Based on the current trend, the film is expected to finish its theatrical run at around the Rs. 150 crore mark.
If it reaches that figure, it would become the highest grossing film of Emraan Hashmi’s career. The result is particularly notable because of the journey of the original Awarapan.
For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Awarapan 2 is the sequel to the 2007 film Awarapan. The original movie did not perform well when it was released in theatres and was considered a disaster at the box office. Over the years, however, it developed a strong cult following, particularly because of its emotional story and music.
Emraan Hashmi was one of the leading stars of intense romantic films during the 2000s and early 2010s. He enjoyed major success with movies such as Murder 2, Raaz 3, Jannat 2 and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. His box office fortunes became less consistent during the latter part of the decade.
The renewed interest in intense love stories and films with popular music eventually helped bring Awarapan 2 to the big screen. The decision appears to have worked, with the sequel turning the story of the original film around at the box office.
The success is also unusual because Awarapan was not a successful theatrical film when it first released. In recent years, some older films such as Sanam Teri Kasam and Laila Majnu found new audiences through theatrical re releases and went on to become hits.
Awarapan 2, however, has taken that revival a step further by turning a sequel to a former box office disaster into a successful theatrical release.
