Nineteen years after Emraan Hashmi first played Shiv Pandit, the character has returned to the big screen with Awarapan 2. Released on August 14 during the Independence Day weekend, the Nitin Kakkar directorial has performed strongly at the box office despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. The romantic action thriller also features Disha Patani, Shabana Azmi, Puran Gabbi, Suvinder Vicky and Vijayant Kohli in important roles.
The film continued its steady run on Day 12, earning Rs 3.75 crore net in India. With this collection, its total domestic net earnings have reached Rs 142.75 crore, while its India gross collection stands at Rs 170.15 crore.
The sequel also earned Rs 0.50 crore from overseas markets on its twelfth day, taking its overseas gross to Rs 31.30 crore. As a result, the film has now crossed the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide, collecting Rs 201.45 crore globally.
According to data from entertainment tracking portal Sacnilk, Awarapan 2 has become the fifth Hindi film of the year to cross Rs 200 crore worldwide. The other films to reach the milestone are Dhurandhar 2, Border 2, Bhooth Bangla and Dhamaal 4.
How Much Did The Original Awarapan Earn?
The original Awarapan was released in 2007 and starred Emraan Hashmi with Shriya Saran, Mrinalini Sharma, Ashutosh Rana and Ashish Vidyarthi. Directed by Mohit Suri, the film did not perform well in theatres at the time. It earned Rs 7.50 crore net in India and had a lifetime worldwide theatrical collection of Rs 12 crore.
However, the film gained cult status over the years, especially because of its music. Songs including Tera Mera Rishta and Toh Phir Aao became popular among fans and have been recreated for Awarapan 2.
Awarapan 2 released alongside Batwara 1947 on August 14 and has emerged as the stronger performer in the box office clash. While Awarapan 2 has crossed Rs 200 crore worldwide, Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 has earned Rs 37.70 crore net in India and Rs 53.77 crore worldwide in its first eight days.
