Mirzapur: The Movie continues to perform strongly at the Indian box office despite recording a drop in collections on Tuesday. The film earned around Rs. 15 crore nett on its fifth day, taking its five day cumulative collection to approximately Rs. 123 crore nett. While Tuesday saw a decline from Monday, the drop is being viewed as a normal part of the film’s box office journey.
Tuesday has increasingly become an important day for films because of discounted ticket prices. Lower ticket rates can encourage more people to visit theatres, resulting in higher footfalls. However, when a film is already performing at a strong level, the increase in audience numbers may not always be enough to make up for the reduction in ticket prices. That appears to have happened with Mirzapur: The Movie on Tuesday.
Interestingly, the film’s footfalls on Tuesday were almost similar to those recorded on its opening day and around 2 lakh higher than Monday. However, the overall gross remained slightly lower because of the discounted ticket prices. This explains why the film registered a drop in collections despite maintaining a healthy audience presence.
The focus now shifts to Wednesday. Advance bookings for the sixth day are looking strong and are almost at the level seen on Monday. The walk in audience is expected to be slightly lower, which means another drop in collections could happen. However, the decline may not be as sharp as seen with some other recent releases.
At the current pace, Mirzapur: The Movie is expected to cross Rs. 145 crore nett during its first week. If the film manages to hold well on Wednesday, its first week total could move closer to Rs. 150 crore nett.
The film is currently showing the box office trend of a BLOCKBUSTER. However, the performance on Wednesday and, more importantly, the second Friday will be crucial. A strong hold after the first week would give the film a much clearer path towards blockbuster status.
