Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts is struggling through a poor run at the Indian box office. On Friday, the movie grossed an estimated ₹2.25 crore nett, taking its total two-day tally to ₹6 crore. After a dismal ₹3.75 crore opener, Friday’s show was expected to put things in motion—but the modest decline indicates subdued interest from Indian filmgoers.
Even though it’s a major addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Thunderbolts has not made a noticeable impact. Not having core MCU icons such as Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth could be a reason for its muted reception.
Cast, Plot, and Direction Fall Short of Buzz
Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts features Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Based on a team of antiheroes dispatched on a perilous mission with hopes for redemption, the film features an ensemble cast. Although the cast is appealing, the absence of big MCU stars has apparently muted its excitement in India.
Echoing a Wider 2025 Hollywood Trend in India
Thunderbolts is not the only Hollywood movie that has been underperforming in India this year. Captain America: Brave New World and Disney’s Snow White also didn’t attract much traffic. Bizarrely, Christopher Nolan’s re-release of Interstellar was the only big Hollywood hit in India this year, reflecting the people’s love for cinematic giants.

Global Box Office Also Underwhelming
Internationally, Thunderbolts is also experiencing similar slow-downs in countries such as China, South Korea, and Europe. In the United States, it’s looking at an opening weekend of $70–75 million, even though it’s facing tough competition from Sinners and the Minecraft film.
If the weekend doesn’t surprise with a boost, Thunderbolts could end up being one of Marvel’s more subdued performers worldwide.
