Emraan Hashmi’s Gunmaaster G9 teaser is out, and the first glimpse makes its intent fairly clear. The film is positioning itself as a commercial action entertainer, but the teaser does not rely on action alone. It also introduces a romantic track, brings Genelia Deshmukh into the picture and, interestingly, places considerable emphasis on the combination of Emraan Hashmi and Himesh Reshammiya.
Here are five things that stand out from the teaser.
Emraan Hashmi is unmistakably at the centre:
The teaser leaves little doubt about whose film this is. From his introduction to the action sequences, Emraan Hashmi gets the bulk of the attention, with the presentation clearly built around establishing his character and his screen presence.
The timing makes that interesting. After the attention around Awarapan 2, there is renewed curiosity around Emraan Hashmi and what his next theatrical outing could look like. Gunmaaster G9 appears to be taking that interest in a distinctly commercial direction.
The action is clearly one of the film’s biggest hooks:
There is very little attempt to disguise what the film is selling. The teaser is packed with action, with Emraan Hashmi getting moments that establish both the intensity of his character and the scale the makers appear to be aiming for.
At the same time, the teaser holds back on the larger story. That could work in its favour. If the subsequent promotional material can continue to raise the stakes without revealing the film’s central twists, the action could remain one of its strongest attractions.
There is a romance running alongside all that action:
For all its emphasis on guns, fights and attitude, Gunmaaster G9 is not being presented as a purely action driven film. The romantic portions involving Genelia Deshmukh introduce a very different texture to the teaser.
That combination could prove important. An action romance gives the film another audience to engage with, while the contrast between the two tracks could also give the characters more room than the teaser initially suggests.
Genelia Deshmukh could be more than just the romantic lead:
Genelia’s presence adds another layer to the film and, at least from the teaser, appears to be an important part of the dynamic around Hashmi’s character.
The teaser offers only a glimpse of their relationship, which makes their chemistry one of the elements worth watching as the campaign develops. If the makers manage to give her character sufficient weight, the film could avoid feeling like a conventional action vehicle built entirely around its male protagonist.
And then there is Himesh Reshammiya:
Music has always been an important part of the Emraan Hashmi cinematic experience, and Himesh Reshammiya’s association with him immediately brings that history into the conversation.
The music in the teaser has already caught attention, with the track carrying the kind of hook that can stay with the listener after the teaser ends. Whether it eventually becomes one of the film’s defining talking points will depend on the songs that follow, but the Emraan and Himesh combination certainly comes with its own expectations.
For now, Gunmaaster G9 appears to be putting together a familiar commercial mix of action, romance, music and star presence. The more interesting question is whether the film can turn that familiar formula into something audiences have a reason to seek out in theatres.
