Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap has been summoned by the JMFC court in Surat following a complaint filed against him for his controversial comment about the Brahmin community. The notice, issued on the basis of a complaint by Surat-based lawyer Kamlesh Rawal, mandates Kashyap or his lawyer to appear in court on May 7. If they fail to do so, the court may proceed with a unilateral decision.
Rawal revealed that he presented evidence including Kashyap’s social media posts and subsequent apology, which the court accepted before issuing the notice. He said, “On April 16, Kashyap made an objectionable comment regarding the Brahmin community. I filed a complaint under sections BNS 196, 197, 351, 352, 353, and 356.”
Background of the Controversy
The controversy erupted when Kashyap responded to a comment online stating, “Brahmins are your father,” by writing, “Brahmin pe main m*******a..koi problem (I’ll pee on the Brahmins…any problem)?”. His response drew heavy backlash on social media, with many accusing him of disrespecting the community.
Following the outrage, Kashyap issued an apology via social media. However, he clarified that his apology was not for the original post, but for a particular line taken out of context. He wrote, “This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends, and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar (cultural values).”
