A.R. Rahman lost his father when he was just nine years old and it was his mother, who played a pivotal role in shaping Rahman’s career in Music.
Rahman’s father was renowned arranger in South Indian movies. After his death he left behind many musical instruments and it was these musical instruments that his mother used to rent out and make a living. But when Rahman grew up the burden of his studies and his sisters made things difficult for his mother to manage. Well-wishers advised Rahman’s mother to sell the instrument but his mother declined as she had seen the music instinct in Rahman. Hence instead of letting Rahman pursue further studies after class XI, his mother guided him to pursue music and imparted him Carnatic music. He even won a scholarship with Trinity College, London, board of the Trinity College of Music.
Few know that his mother believes in astrology hence when Rahman got his first film, Mani Ratnam’s ROJA, she consulted an astrologer in Chennai to suggest an Islamic name for her son, Dileep Kumar (Rahman’s original name before he converted to Islam). The astrologer recommended A.R. Rahman. His mother followed the astrologer’s suggestions. Meanwhile the audio company which was about to credit the music title with Dileep changed it at the last movement.
The magic of A.R.Rahman worked so brilliantly that Rahman never looked back. Thus after God, it is his mother, Rahman adores most!
