Renowned comedian and television host Bharti Singh recently opened up about the dark side of her early career struggles. In a candid conversation on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Bharti shared harrowing experiences from her past when she worked odd jobs to support her family.
Early Struggles and Lack of Awareness
Bharti recalled performing comedy skits in colleges when her family had no money. “Jab paise bilkul nahi the, main colleges mein comedy skits karvane jaati thi,” she said. During this phase, Bharti would travel by bus at 5 am, often crammed with milkmen. At the time, she wasn’t aware of the concept of good or bad touch.
“It took me one and a half years to understand I was being harassed,” she said. “Mujhe toh pata hi nahi tha.” She remembered instances where men touched her inappropriately, but she assumed it was accidental. “Jab kisine kass ke pakda, phir samajh aaya,” Bharti recalled, explaining that only then did she begin to realise the difference between accidental and deliberate actions.
No Guidance at Home
Bharti highlighted how topics like sexual harassment or consent were never discussed in her household. “Women in the family were too uncomfortable to talk about these things,” she said. This lack of awareness delayed her understanding of inappropriate behaviour.
Fighting Back with Strength
Once Bharti became aware of what was happening, she stood her ground. “I used my elbows. I even hit men taller than me,” she shared, reflecting her strength and determination to protect herself.
Rising Above It All
Today, Bharti Singh is one of the most successful and highest-paid names in Indian television. She was most recently seen hosting Laughter Chefs 2 on Colors TV, continuing to inspire many with her talent and resilience.
