Bipasha Basu returns to acting with Hansal Mehta’s Barabanki

Bipasha Basu returns to acting after six years with Hansal Mehta’s crime thriller series Barabanki, alongside Sunny Kaushal and Vishal Jethwa.

Bipasha Basu is officially back on the acting front, and her choice of comeback is interesting. The actor has begun shooting for filmmaker Hansal Mehta’s crime thriller series Barabanki, marking her first major screen outing in nearly six years. Bipasha Basu, who was last seen on screen in the 2020 OTT thriller Dangerous, has largely stayed away from acting in recent years. Her last theatrical release was the 2015 horror thriller Alone. Her return with Barabanki therefore marks a significant new phase for an actor who was once among the most recognisable female stars of mainstream Hindi cinema.

The project, directed by Hansal Mehta, is set in 1984 and draws from retired IPS officer Aloke Lal’s book The Barabanki Narcos: Busting India’s Most Notorious Drug Cartel. The story revolves around Lal’s operation against a powerful opium cartel in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district. Sunny Kaushal and Vishal Jethwa are also part of the cast, while details of their characters, as well as Basu’s role, are being kept under wraps.

What makes the timing of Basu’s return even more relevant is what she has said about her own readiness to work again. In a recent interview with Elle India, the 47-year-old actor said she is now extremely eager to act after choosing to give her full attention to her daughter Devi during the early years of motherhood. With her daughter older and spending more time at school and with friends, Basu said she now has the space to return to the profession she enjoys.

The comeback also arrives at a moment when Bipasha Basu is revisiting the very image that made her stand apart in Bollywood. She has spoken openly about how muscular and visibly fit women were not always considered an acceptable template for female actors when she started out. Bipasah believes she helped change that conversation, arguing that fitness should be about being healthy rather than simply looking good.

Bipasha is not coming back to recreate the star image of her 20s. She is returning at 47, after motherhood and years away from regular acting, with a character-driven crime story led by a filmmaker known for grounded, serious storytelling.

For an actor whose career was built on taking risks with her screen image, from Raaz and Jism to Dhoom 2 and Corporate, Barabanki could represent another evolution rather than a nostalgia-driven comeback.

Bipasha Basu is not returning because Bollywood suddenly needs the old Bipasha back. She appears to be returning because she feels ready to work again, and this time on her own terms.
