Not everybody is born in a life of fame and prosperity. For many, success remains a faraway dream that involves hard work, determination, and a readiness to conquer seemingly impassable barriers. One such story is that of a comedian who has won over the hearts of millions with his humor and intelligence. But through the laughter and applause, there is a background of struggle, adversity, and determination.
In a heart-to-heart conversation with Parmeet Sethi, comedian Rajiv Thakur bravely shared his poignant journey from a poverty-stricken childhood to becoming one of India’s most beloved comedians.

A Series of Unfortunate Events
Rajiv disclosed that on the day he was born in Amritsar, continuous heavy rains persisted for seven consecutive days, causing his father’s thread factory to catch fire in a huge blaze. The devastating event altered the direction of his family’s life, as they had to stay in a one-room dwelling.
He remembered, “My father’s struggle started after my birth. The day I was born, it rained for seven consecutive days. We had a thread factory, but all the machines were burnt down.”* Rajiv never allowed these challenges to suppress his spirit despite these troubles.
Turning Pain into Humor
In retrospect, Rajiv laughs at his ordeal. He joked, “Bhagwan ne paida aisa kiya hai, jahan bhi jayega kuch toh dhamaaka karega,” highlighting that he now considers himself fortunate for others, including Kapil Sharma.
He also laughed about his childhood punishments, saying, “My dad used to hit me with a belt. Maine jo maar khayi hai bachpan me.”
Achievement in the Entertainment Sector
In 2024, Rajiv appeared in The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix and portrayed a terrorist in IC 841: The Kandahar Hijack. Presently, with a net worth of Rs 10-12 crore, he is a successful comedian and a popular name in the TV sector.
