Big Honor for Kiran Rao! Indian Filmmaker Joins Jury of Prestigious Shanghai International Film Festival

Acclaimed Indian director Kiran Rao has been named to the global jury at the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), Asia’s most respected and competitive film festival. This is another high-point in Rao’s successful career as a writer, producer, and director.

A Seat Among Global Cinema Icons
Rao will be on an illustrious panel under the chair of Giuseppe Tornatore, the renowned Italian director of the Oscar-winning classic Cinema Paradiso. The international jury also comprises:

Iván Fund – Argentine director

Huang Bo – Chinese actor and director

Thanassis Karathanos – Greek producer

Yang Lina – Chinese documentary director

Yong Mei – winner of awards for Chinese actress

This eclectic roster mirrors SIFF’s mission to present voices from around the world of cinema.

Rao’s Reaction: A Celebration of World Storytelling
Speaking out on her enthusiasm, Rao stated, “It’s an honor to be part of a festival that celebrates international cinema and storytelling. I’m looking forward to seeing the diverse range of voices and viewpoints on screen, and to meeting my fellow jurors from across the globe.”

The 27th SIFF will be held from June 13 to June 22, 2025, in Shanghai, China, and will be a major cross-cultural exchange and cinematic excellence platform.

Laapataa Ladies: A Global Triumph
Rao’s latest directorial effort, Laapataa Ladies, was India’s official candidate for Best International Feature Film in the 96th Academy Awards. Aamir Khan Productions, Jio Studios, and Kindling Pictures produced the film, which has been praised for its witty but touching depiction of rural women’s lives, appealing to people and critics across the globe.

Rao’s jury assignment solidifies her increasing relevance in the global film landscape.
