Shoojit Sircar Slams Bollywood’s Greed: ‘Reconsider Actor Fees

Acclaimed director Shoojit Sircar has raised serious alarms regarding Bollywood’s slow start to 2025, with just one significant movie, Chhaava, having released during the crucial first quarter of the year. While speaking to ANI recently, the director discussed the reasons for the poor performance of the Hindi film industry and the missing crowd in cinemas.

Sircar added that one of the most important problems is that there is no creative risk-taking by filmmakers. “Producers and directors do not want to experiment. We need new and practical themes, irrespective of the genre. Recycling old stories will not be an option anymore,” he stressed. He called upon creators to experiment and provide new storytelling to entice audiences to return to theatres.

The director also spoke about another crucial issue the astronomical pay of Bollywood actors. He said that some actors must change their high rates, or they will miss out on good work. “If actors keep charging astronomical fees, many directors will stop going to them altogether,” Sircar cautioned.

Talking of his own banner, Rising Sun Films, Sircar eagerly boasted that they keep very tight budget control. “We never allow the cost to increase. That’s why there are fewer complaints. We work with actors who know and respect our vision,” he clarified.

Shoojit Sircar’s latest release, I Want To Talk featuring Abhishek Bachchan, managed to gross a mere ₹1.25 crore at the box office, which was a business failure. Nevertheless, it found a good response on OTT platforms, indicating the audience’s desire to move towards digital content.

Sircar ended on a note of advising filmmakers to give creative integrity and telling a story the top priority over formulaic commerce, stating, “Believe in your vision and the right audience will follow.”
