Student Of The Year (SOTY) is returning, but the third chapter is set to look very different from its predecessors. Karan Johar’s franchise is being developed as a web series, with Reema Maya directing. Johar had confirmed Maya’s involvement in 2024, indicating that the digital series would carry her own creative voice rather than replicate the style of the earlier films.
Shanaya Kapoor is expected to headline the series and is reportedly playing a double role. The six episode project is also being positioned as a darker and edgier youth drama, with its world being compared to Class and Euphoria, a significant departure from the glossy campus romance and rivalry of the first two films.
The series is expected to stream on JioHotstar, although a release date has yet to be officially announced. Student Of The Year 3: After The Dark has also been discussed as a possible title, but that remains unconfirmed.
The franchise began in 2012 with Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, followed by Student Of The Year 2 in 2019, which introduced Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria alongside Tiger Shroff.
For Shanaya, the series marks another important step in her association with Dharma. For the franchise, it is a calculated move from theatrical campus entertainer to darker streaming drama, with Reema Maya’s sensibility now at the centre of the reboot.
