BLOCKBUSTER DELAY ALERT!” – Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Mahavatar’ Now Scheduled for 2027 – What’s Behind the Postponement?

Audiences of Vicky Kaushal’s highly anticipated mythological series Mahavatar will have to wait a little longer, as the release of the film has apparently been postponed from December 2026 to 2027. As per a report from Peeping Moon, the film, which is being co-produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films and directed by Amar Kaushik, was originally slated to go on floors in the fourth quarter of 2025. But now, shooting is likely to start only in April 2026.

The delay is attributed to Kaushal’s packed schedule, as he is currently committed to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period romance Love & War. The film, also starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, began shooting in late 2024 and is expected to continue until the third quarter of 2025. With Kaushal allotting nearly 200 days to Bhansali’s project, Mahavatar’s schedule had to be adjusted, making a 2026 release unfeasible.

Maddock Films’ Largest Production Endeavor So Far
At WAVES 2025, conducted on May 2, producer Dinesh Vijan discussed the value of telling stories based on Indian culture and gave an update on Mahavatar. He referred to it as Maddock Films’ largest production endeavor so far, emphasizing the studio’s dedication to bringing culturally rich storytelling that connects with viewers.

Vicky Kaushal as Parashurama
Vicky Kaushal had released the first look of Mahavatar on social media a year ago, which turned viral in no time. He is Chiranjeevi Parashurama, the dharma warrior who is immortal, in the mythological drama. The film is Kaushal’s first with director Amar Kaushik, who is famous for Stree 2.

Though the delay will be a disappointment to fans, excitement continues to build for Mahavatar, with the scope of production and Kaushal’s dramatic transformation ensuring a cinematic experience when it is eventually released in 2027.
