The official trailer for A Talent For Murder has been released, offering a first look at the upcoming thriller starring Helen Mirren and Alden Ehrenreich. The film is set to premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival in September before arriving in theatres on October 23, 2026.
Directed by Anton Corbijn, the film features a screenplay by Joanna Murray Smith and is based on her 2014 play Switzerland. Bleecker Street and LD Entertainment will release the movie in theatres.
The story follows Edward Ridgeway, a young man working for a New York publisher. He travels to Switzerland with an important task. Edward has been sent to meet famous novelist Patricia Highsmith and convince her to write one final story featuring her well known character Tom Ripley. However, his visit soon becomes much more complicated than expected.
Patricia Highsmith was a real life writer known for her psychological crime stories. She wrote the 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, which introduced the character of Tom Ripley. Highsmith also wrote the novel Strangers on a Train, which was later adapted into Alfred Hitchcock’s famous 1951 film of the same name.
The trailer begins with Helen Mirren playing an older Patricia Highsmith as she smokes and appears deep in thought. A disturbing line then appears on screen: “Some crime stories can only come from the most dangerous of minds.”
The footage then introduces Alden Ehrenreich as Edward Ridgeway, the young visitor from New York who has travelled to Switzerland to convince Patricia to return to the world of Tom Ripley. At first, Edward appears to have a simple professional reason for his visit. However, his behaviour soon raises questions about what he really wants.
As Patricia and Edward begin working together on the story, the situation becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Edward seems to be keeping important information from her, while Patricia begins to question his true intentions.
The trailer shows their unusual collaboration becoming more dangerous as secrets slowly come to light. What begins as a meeting between a publisher’s representative and a celebrated author eventually turns into a tense situation with frightening consequences.
Along with Mirren and Ehrenreich, A Talent For Murder also stars Olivia Cooke and Juliet Stevenson.
