Andrew Garfield’s The Uprising has a Robin Hood twist

Andrew Garfield and Paul Greengrass bring England’s 1381 Peasants’ Revolt to the big screen in The Uprising, amid a surprise Robin Hood connection

Andrew Garfield and Paul Greengrass are teaming up for The Uprising, a medieval historical epic arriving in U.S. theaters. Set during England’s 1381 Peasants’ Revolt against King Richard II, the film follows Garfield as a farmer who becomes a leader of the rebellion. The ensemble includes Jamie Bell, Tom Hollander, Jonny Lee Miller and Thomasin McKenzie, alongside Stephen Dillane, Cosmo Jarvis, Woody Norman and Katherine Waterston.

The film has also generated curiosity over its connection to Robin Hood. Recent marketing from Focus Features referenced the “Rise of Robin Hood,” even as the film’s official positioning describes it as a story about the real uprising that helped inspire the Robin Hood legend. The UK distributor has maintained that The Uprising is not a Robin Hood movie.

For Greengrass, known for historically grounded dramas and large scale filmmaking, the project offers a fresh take on a lesser explored chapter of English history, while Garfield takes on a very different kind of leading role.

The Uprising opens in the U.S. on September 10, with a wider release scheduled for September 11.
