Artificial teaser gives chilling first look at Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman

Artificial, Luca Guadagnino’s Sam Altman biopic starring Andrew Garfield, gets its first teaser, offering a dark look at OpenAI and the story behind ChatGPT.

Neon has released the first teaser for Artificial, Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The teaser arrives after Amazon unexpectedly withdrew its support for the project earlier this year. The film has already attracted attention because of its subject, director and well known cast.

The first teaser runs for a little more than a minute, but it gives audiences an early idea of the film’s dark and tense approach. Rather than presenting the story as a straightforward technology drama, the footage uses elements of horror and suspense while exploring the events surrounding the development of ChatGPT.

Andrew Garfield plays Sam Altman in the film. Known for movies such as The Social Network and The Amazing Spider Man, Garfield appears remarkably similar to Altman in the teaser. He is shown walking through dark corridors while eerie music plays in the background.

The footage then takes him into a blue lit room filled with guns. The setting appears similar to the kind of secure room Altman once discussed having in an interview with The New Yorker in 2016.

The unsettling atmosphere continues through Altman’s dialogue in the teaser. His character can be heard saying, “We opened Pandora’s box together” and “We get to be the ones to shepherd people into this new world.” The lines suggest that the film will explore the excitement, concerns and responsibility surrounding the rapid development of artificial intelligence.

Garfield is not the only familiar face in the cast. Monica Barbaro, who appeared in A Complete Unknown and Top Gun: Maverick, plays Mira Murati, the former OpenAI executive. She also appears in the first teaser.

With Guadagnino directing and Garfield playing Altman, Artificial is shaping up as a dramatic interpretation of one of the most talked about developments in modern technology. The teaser gives only a brief glimpse of the story, leaving questions about how the film will portray the people and events connected to OpenAI and ChatGPT.
