Neon has released the first official trailer for Fjord, the upcoming drama from Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu. Starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, the film explores family, religion, suspicion and the difficult line between genuine concern and prejudice. Fjord is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on October 9, 2026.
The story follows the Gheorghiu family, led by Mihai, a religious Romanian father played by Sebastian Stan, and Lisbet, his Norwegian wife played by Renate Reinsve. The couple moves with their five children to Lisbet’s hometown in Norway and settles in a small coastal village surrounded by mountains and fjords.
The family initially sees the move as a chance to begin a new life. Their children soon become friends with children from the neighbouring Halberg family, helping the Gheorghius become part of the local community. However, their peaceful start does not last long.
The family’s strict beliefs and behaviour begin to attract attention in the village. The situation becomes much more serious when allegations of abuse involving the children are raised. The Gheorghius suddenly find themselves under close examination from neighbours and authorities.
The trailer does not appear to give viewers a simple answer about what really happened. Instead, the film seems to focus on how quickly people can form opinions when they do not understand another family’s culture, beliefs or way of life. It also raises the question of whether the community is genuinely trying to protect children or allowing suspicion and prejudice to influence its actions.
Sebastian Stan plays Mihai, whose strong religious beliefs become an important part of the conflict. Renate Reinsve’s Lisbet has a different connection to the village because she grew up there. Her position becomes increasingly complicated as her family faces growing pressure from the community.
The cast also includes Lisa Carlehed, Henrikke Lund Olsen, Vanessa Ceban, Jonathan Ciprian Breazu, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Lisa Loven Kongsli and Markus Tønseth.
Fjord is written and directed by Cristian Mungiu, a two time Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner. The film was shot entirely in Norway, using its fjords, mountains and remote coastal locations to create an increasingly tense atmosphere.
The beautiful surroundings contrast with the growing conflict faced by the family. As suspicion spreads, the close community begins to feel less welcoming and more isolating.
Fjord explores questions about parenting, religion, cultural differences and protecting children, while also examining how genuine concern can sometimes turn into unfair judgment. The film arrives in cinemas on October 9, 2026.
