Kate Hudson reveals why she still hasn’t married fiancé Danny Fujikawa five years after engagement

Kate Hudson opens up about why she and Danny Fujikawa are still not married five years after their engagement, citing family size and wedding costs.

Kate Hudson has opened up about why she and her fiancé Danny Fujikawa are still not married, nearly five years after he proposed. During a recent episode of the “Sibling Revelry” podcast, which Kate hosts with her brother Oliver Hudson, the actress spoke about the challenges of planning a wedding. She admitted that the guest list is one of her biggest concerns because her family is so large. While discussing destination weddings with guests Joey King and Hunter King, Kate explained that getting married is something she still thinks about, but the number of people she would have to invite makes the process difficult.

Kate, 47, said that whenever she and Fujikawa start discussing their wedding, they face the same problem. According to the actress, Fujikawa would prefer to have a small wedding, but her family alone would make that almost impossible. Kate joked that her family includes around 50 people even before adding friends and other guests. She also pointed out that there are many children, aunts, uncles and cousins in her family, making the idea of keeping the ceremony small much harder.

Wedding expenses are another reason Kate has been hesitant about getting married. While talking about the cost of flowers at Joey King’s wedding, the actress admitted that the overall expense of a wedding worries her. Kate joked that she would rather keep things simple and serve snacks such as chips and salsa instead of spending a huge amount on a traditional wedding celebration.

Kate and Fujikawa announced their engagement in September 2021. The actress shared a photo of the couple together on a mountain while showing off her engagement ring. The couple started dating in December 2016 and welcomed their daughter, Rani Rose Hudson Fujikawa, in October 2018. Kate is also the mother of Ryder Russell Robinson, whom she shares with former husband Chris Robinson, and Bingham Hawn Bellamy, whom she shares with former fiancé Matt Bellamy.

The actress has spoken several times about her relaxed approach to marriage. In November 2022, she said that she and Fujikawa were in no hurry to get married because they had other priorities. In 2023, she admitted that planning a wedding felt overwhelming at the time. She also considered having a traditional Japanese wedding ceremony to honour Fujikawa and their daughter’s heritage.

Kate had previously suggested that a destination wedding could be a good option because people who really wanted to attend would make the effort to travel. However, she later admitted in 2025 that she might never get married at all. During an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Kate said she liked the idea of being engaged forever and explained that she values her freedom.

For now, Kate and Fujikawa appear to be happy taking their time. While marriage remains a possibility, the actress has made it clear that she does not feel pressured to walk down the aisle simply because they have been engaged for several years.
