Following the 2025 Oscars win for Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez, Zoe Saldaña confronted criticism from some Mexican viewers who found the movie’s portrayal of their nation insulting. She voiced regret that the movie offended viewers during a press conference but stood behind the broader themes behind the film.

“I am so, so sorry that many Mexicans were offended. That was never our intention,” Saldaña said, reiterating that the filmmakers spoke from a position of love and respect. She went on to say that Emilia Pérez was not meant to represent Mexico but a universal tale of resilience and friendship. These women might have been Russian, Dominican, Black from Detroit, from Israel, or from Gaza,” she said. “They are universal women fighting against structural oppression, seeking to create their most real voices.”

Welcoming Open Dialogue

Despite the criticism, Saldaña welcomed continued conversation about how the film could have been improved. “I’m always open to sitting down with my Mexican brothers and sisters, with love and respect, to have a great conversation on how Emilia Pérez could have been done better,” she remarked, signaling her willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.

A Personal and Cultural Milestone

During her acceptance speech, Saldaña also made a point to consider her own immigrant heritage and the value of being an Oscar winner for a Spanish-speaking character. Even though she had been attacked both by Mexican and LGBTQ+ audiences throughout the awards season, Emilia Pérez was a serious threat to win at the Oscars with 13 nominations. The movie won two awards, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song, but tied the record for most losses in Oscars history with 11 failed bids.
