A new Pokémon movie is officially on the way. The popular trading card and video game franchise has announced Pokémon: Wild Card, giving fans their first look at the upcoming film through a teaser trailer. The announcement was made on Sunday, August 30, during the final day of the 2026 World Championships in San Francisco, California. The event was the first ever fan convention of its kind for the franchise, making the announcement an important part of the celebrations.
Pokémon: Wild Card will be the first new Pokémon movie since 2020. The film will feature a Pokémon TCG player and Mimikyu, giving the story a different focus from previous movies in the franchise. More details about the plot and characters have not yet been revealed.
Katsuhiko Kitada will direct the upcoming movie, while Akemi Hayashi is handling the character designs. Pokémon: Wild Card is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release in 2027.
The movie announcement comes shortly after another major update involving the Pokémon franchise. Disney+ and The Pokémon Company International recently announced a global distribution partnership that will bring new Pokémon content to audiences around the world.
The first project under the deal will be Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu. The stop motion series has been created by Aardman and is scheduled to debut on Disney+ worldwide in 2027.
The series follows Sirfetch’d and Pichu as they travel through the Galar Region. Together, they set out on a gallant quest to help and protect Pokémon across the region. Their missions rarely go as planned, but their noble deeds forge their friendship as they step bravely into the unknown where peril, alliances, rivalries, extraordinary Pokémon, and endless laughs await them.
Pokémon and Aardman first teased the project in late 2024, leaving fans curious about what the two companies were working on.
The new distribution deal will also include Pokémon the Series: The Beginning. The series recently began airing on Disney XD and is currently available to stream on Disney+ in the US and select international markets.
With Pokémon: Wild Card heading to theatres in 2027 and the Aardman series also arriving that year, fans can expect several new additions to the Pokémon franchise over the coming months.
