GRAMMY nominated singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes has marked 10 years of his album Illuminate with two new versions of Illuminate (10th Anniversary Edition). The new editions are available through streaming platforms and vinyl. Originally released in 2016, Illuminate became an important album in Mendes’ career and included popular songs such as “Treat You Better,” “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” “Mercy,” and “Ruin.”
The album continues to attract attention a decade after its original release. Illuminate was recently certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA, while “Treat You Better” has now received a 9x Platinum RIAA certification. The song also gained fresh attention after going viral and collecting 25 million creates on TikTok. It has returned to the Billboard charts 10 years after its release, reaching No. 62 on the Global 200. It also reached No. 37 on the Global Excl. U.S. charts this year.
“There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” has also achieved a 9x Platinum RIAA certification. The song reached No. 111 on the Global 200 and No. 88 on the Global Excl. U.S. charts. It has now spent 114 weeks on the Global Excl. U.S. chart, making it Mendes’ longest charting hit. “Mercy” has also been certified 6x Platinum.
The new anniversary editions add previously unreleased material from the 2016 recording sessions. The DSP version features the 2016 demo of “Cold in California”, while the D2C edition available through Mendes’ store includes the 2016 demo of “What If I Told You A Story.” All three versions also include live performances of “Treat You Better,” “Ruin,” and “Mercy,” recorded during his sold out 2025 tour On The Road Again.
Mendes announced the anniversary release on September 16, exactly 10 years after the Illuminate tracklist was first revealed in 2016. Ahead of the release, fans noticed lyrics from “Cold in California” appearing on billboards around the world. The song was officially revealed on September 23rd, the actual anniversary of the album.
To mark the release, Mendes also partnered with Gucci in Milan, where he surprised 100 fans with an intimate performance of songs from Illuminate. The celebration adds another chapter to the album’s 10 year journey.
