Kangana Ranaut’s much-awaited political drama, Emergency, finally hit the theatres. Directed and headlined by Kangana, the film is based on the true story of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Despite the buzz surrounding the film, Emergency had a sluggish start at the box office, collecting just Rs 2.25 crore net on its opening day in India.
Aided by Cinema Lovers Day: Ticket prices were drastically cut to Rs 99 everywhere, across the board, even in standard formats. Nonetheless, the ticketing response still has been nothing but underwhelming. The actual test for Emergency shall start on Saturday, when regular ticket prices have come back on stream. That film needs an encouraging weekend trend and steady feetfall to propel it through this week.

Although Kangana Ranaut has been praised for her performance as Indira Gandhi, the direction by her has not received much positive feedback from both critics and audiences. This polarizing reception may curb the movie’s potential at the box office.
Emergency, to begin with, has cutthroat competition. In fact, after it comes Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force which releases on 24th January itself. Towards month end, at the fag end, the Shahid Kapoor Deva” would get released, grabbing attention. No wonder it’s a concern about Emergency’s relatively minuscule box office shares.
