Ridley Scott’s much-awaited Gladiator II featuring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, and Connie Nielsen could not move at a desirable pace at the Indian box office. The period drama, that is the sequel to the iconic 2000 Oscar-winning Gladiator film, managed to do less than its pre-release buzz in India.
Day-wise Box Office Collection in India (Nett):
Day 1 (Thursday): ₹1.6 crore
Day 2 (Friday): ₹2.2 crore
Day 3 (Saturday): ₹2.05 crore
Day 4 (Sunday): ₹50 lakh
Day 5 (Monday): ₹65 lakh
Day 6 (Tuesday): ₹70 lakh
Day 7 (Wednesday): ₹50 lakh
Total (7 days): ₹8.2 crore
After a disappointing ₹1.6 crore opening day, collections peaked modestly on Day 2 before tapering off during the weekdays. By the end of its first week, the film netted just ₹8.2 crore in India. But it was much behind expectations and even its competitors as Vikrant Massey’s The Sabarmati Report went growing on its seventh day. Not to forget, Gladiator II also has a fight on hand in the shape of the re-release of Kal Ho Naa Ho in Indian theatres.
International Box Office Performance:
Globally, Gladiator II is likely to reach $100 million before its North American launch on November 22, 2024. The film has been produced with a whopping budget of $300 million and has set a target of $600 million lifetime worldwide, surpassing Ridley Scott’s highest-grossing year in 2017.
The first Gladiator (2000) released worldwide grossed $460 million with five Academy Awards, Best Picture included. The sequel has huge expectations to cross.
Outlook:
Though having a lukewarm reception in India, prospects in international markets are pretty bright. The movie’s sustainability in global markets will define if it can recover the massive budget it has incurred and try to beat the margin of the predecessor.
