Ridley Scott’s sequel to the 2000 classic Gladiator crossed the $200 million mark in its second weekend, cementing it as a significant box office milestone for the filmmaker.

Box Office Breakdown:
Opening Weekend (US): The film took $55.5 million, marking Ridley Scott’s second-biggest domestic debut ever.
International Holdovers (2nd Weekend): Gladiator II took up $50 million and took its total internationally to $165.5 million.
Worldwide Total (2nd Weekend): The film has gained $221 million dollars so far in global earnings.

Competition:
Despite the good fortune, the trade is competing with Wicked, which premiered on the same weekend in the US. Wicked opened with a global cume of $164.18 million on its opening weekend and is likely to cross the $200 million mark sooner than next weekend and thereby may near the numbers of Gladiator II by next weekend.

Film Details:
Plot: The film traces the journey of Lucius, the son of Maximus from the original, who gains popularity as a gladiator.
Budget: a reported $250 million to produce, and around $100 million in promotions.

With a powerful international and domestic collection, Gladiator II looks well on track to be one of Ridley Scott’s most successful films yet. Of course, its long-term success will depend upon how it stacks up against stronger competition like Wicked.
