The much-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 epic Gladiator, Gladiator II, opened theatrically on November 15, 2024, and has already been a talk of the town at the box office. With Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, and Connie Nielsen in the lead, the film has so far managed to break the opening day of Indian release The Sabarmati Report.
Being said that Gladiator II will open at the domestic box office with ₹2 crore today, a sequel after 24 years. The original Gladiator had done around $2 million in India over its lifetime. The Sabarmati Report, meanwhile, starring Vikrant Massey and Raashii Khanna, has opened lukewarm with around ₹1 crore. Traction remains minimal there on advance bookings.
International, Gladiator II can do the exponential level of business. According to preliminary estimates, it may rake in more than $100 million at international markets ahead of its North America release on November 22, 2024. With nearly a $300 million production budget, the film will have to come out clean above $600 million worldwide to be the biggest Ridley Scott hit. The last box office triumph that he enjoyed was way back six years ago, in 2017.
The true Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe, was a commercial success that earned it over $460 million in grossing dollars worldwide and winning five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Time will tell if Gladiator II can match but more so top the cultural impact at the box office, but so far, the sequel looks good and has fanned and reignited the passion for epic period drama films among fans.
