Suriya’s Kanguva was released in theaters on November 14. This fantasy action thriller, directed by Siruthai Siva and produced by KE Gnanavel Raja, received mixed reviews but saw a fair opening at the box office.
Early box office estimates from Sacnilk report that Kanguva earned Rs 5.41 crore in India across all languages, though confirmed figures are still awaited. Initially set to release on October 10, the film was delayed to avoid a clash with Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan. While a Thursday release may not offer an immediate advantage, Kanguva is expected to perform better over the weekend. Trade analyst Ramesh Bala commented that Kanguva had a “soft opening,” with a delay in advance bookings impacting multiplex sales. However, the response in Tamil Nadu and Chennai was solid, marking a career-best opening for Suriya. Compared to his last film, Etharkkum Thunindhavan, Kanguva is projected to make two to three times the collection.
India Today Digital gave the film a rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars. In their review, they noted, “Suriya is the pillar that saves Kanguva to an extent. His acting shines in both action and emotional scenes, carrying much of the film’s weight. Bobby Deol, however, is underutilized, with slo-mo shots and head tilts attempting to make him menacing, but his character lacks depth. Disha Patani also has limited involvement, overshadowed by supporting actors in key action scenes.”
Kanguva is an ambitious period epic exploring two timelines, with Suriya portraying dual roles. This film marks the Tamil debut of Disha Patani and Bobby Deol, lending it a fresh appeal. Combining historical drama with layered, character-driven storytelling, Kanguva aims to offer a multi-dimensional narrative.
