The Tamil fantasy action film Kanguva, starring Suriya, has faced a sharp decline in domestic box office collections despite a promising start. Directed by Siva and made on an ambitious budget of ₹350 crore, the film is struggling to maintain momentum after its opening weekend.
Box Office Performance
On Day 1, Kanguva managed a decent ₹24 crore, but its collections dropped drastically by 60.42%, earning only ₹9.5 crore on Day 2. The subsequent daily earnings were:
Day 3: ₹9.85 crore
Day 4: ₹10.25 crore
Day 5: ₹3.15 crore
Day 6: ₹3.25 crore
Day 7: ₹2.40 crore
As of now, the film has amassed a total of ₹62.40 crore at the India box office, according to Sacnilk. With limited theatrical occupancy rates 13.72% across Tamil shows and 6.97% for Hindi—the film’s future at the box office remains uncertain. Its Tamil 3D and Hindi versions logged overall occupancy rates of 13.36% and 9.08%, respectively.
Industry Reaction
Amid Kanguva’s struggles, the Tamil Nadu Producers Council (TNPC) has taken a stand against First Day First Show (FDFS) reviews posted by YouTube channels. In a formal letter, they urged theater owners to ban FDFS fan interviews and public reviews on their premises. TNPC stated:
“While journalists have every right to critique films, personal attacks and destructive reviews can deeply harm a movie’s prospects, as seen with films like Kanguva, Vettaiyan, and Indian 2.”
Film Highlights
Directed by Siva, Kanguva unfolds across two timelines: one in 1070, where a tribal warrior fights to protect his people from the Romans, and another in 2024, following a bounty hunter on a perilous mission.
The film boasts an ensemble cast, including Suriya, Bobby Deol, Disha Patani, Natarajan Subramaniam, Yogi Babu, and Redin Kingsley. A dual cameo appearance by Karthi adds to its intrigue.
Outlook
Whether Kanguva can surpass the ₹100 crore mark remains uncertain as its box office performance falters. Industry observers will watch the coming weekend closely to see if the film regains any momentum.
