L2 Empuraan has slowed down as it reaches its second week, even though it had a good opening at the box office. Sacnilk reports that the net collection of the film is now ₹88.35 crore, with ₹84.35 crore being collected in its first week. The film collected an estimated ₹4 crore on its second Thursday, taking the total to ₹88.35 crore nett in India.

The movie opened well, collecting ₹21 crore on its opening day, March 27. It then collected ₹11.1 crore on its first Friday and ₹13.25 crore and ₹13.65 crore over the weekend. Since the weekend, though, the box office figures of the movie have been consistently declining, and it will have to perform strongly over the weekend to keep up its momentum.

Controversial Cuts and Backlash

Following the release of the movie, producers were confronted with criticism of some fictional scenes, especially those showing the 2002 Gujarat riots. The CBFC thus ordered 24 voluntary cuts to resolve the controversy, such as modifications of scenes showing religious buildings, violence against women, and the name of the villain. Actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi cleared in Parliament that the modifications were done at the discretion of the producers and the main actor Mohanlal and with the consent of the director and not because of political pressure.

Sequel to Lucifer

L2 Empuraan is the sequel to the 2019 hit Lucifer, featuring Mohanlal as the mysterious Stephen Nedumpally, aka Khureshi Ab’raam. His loyal right-hand man is played by Prithviraj as Zayed Masood. The movie paves the way for the next one, L3 The Beginning, with Mohanlal’s son, Pranav Mohanlal, playing a young Stephen in the final scenes.
