Varun Tej’s latest outing Matka, a period drama that runs from 1958 to 1982, received a dull opening at the box office since its release. Although the performance by the actor has gained notable critical appreciation, the film could not attract audiences in and has emerged to be Varun Tej’s career lowest opener.

Box Office Collections
Day 1: ₹71 lakh (India).
Day 2: ₹70 lakh (India).
Overall (2 Days): ₹1.41 crore (India). The Telugu occupancy in the film on Friday stood at just 14.56%, with the maximum reported in Visakhapatnam at 20.25%. This said a lot about how the film struggled to find its feet even in its primary market.

Film Overview
Matka is an action-packed drama that narrates the story of a Matka gambling and gangster Vasu. It has been directed by Karuna Kumar and is inspired by a real-life incident. The movie runs across 24 years and unfolds the entire story against the background of Vizag with the presence of Meenakshii Chaudhary and Nora Fatehi among its cast.

The film was released in several languages including Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam, but has taken time to catch the wind along the regions.

Varun Tej Challenges
The lacklustre performances of Matka leaves Varun Tej in a woeful phase after expecting big things from this movie. The cold box office reactions along with lesser audiences’ engagement of the movies may create more issues for the films to break even on production costs.

Production Details
Matka is a product of filmmakers Vijender Reddy Teegala and Rajani Talluri of Jai Viratra Entertainment Limited, presented by WAMINDIA. History and drama promised to blend in interesting ways but fell horrible short in terms of execution and appeal to audiences.

Outlook
Matka is not garnering too much traction at the box office, with minimal growth in collections. To be seen is how word of mouth or regional promotions will help the film improve its performance in the coming days.
