Vettaiyan, the much-anticipated Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan-starrer action-thriller, has taken a strong start at the domestic box office, grossing around ₹30 crore on its first day. The film’s Tamil version led the charge, contributing ₹26.15 crore, followed by ₹3.2 crore from its Telugu version, and ₹60 lakh from its Hindi version. Despite solid openings, Vettaiyan’s day-one performance fell short of Rajinikanth’s previous blockbuster Jailer, which collected ₹48.35 crore on its opening day. However, Vettaiyan surpassed the opening day collection of Rajinikanth’s 2021 release Annaatthe, which earned ₹29.9 crore.

Occupancy rates reveal strong regional support, with Tamil shows enjoying a 59.43% occupancy, while Telugu shows logged 37.66% and Hindi shows saw a much lower 8.98%, according to Sacnilk. Internationally, the film debuted at number one in key markets like the USA, UAE, Malaysia, and Singapore, as reported by film trade analyst Ramesh Bala.
Vettaiyan has been well-received by Rajinikanth’s fans, who were impressed by his portrayal of SP Athiyan IPS, a no-nonsense encounter specialist. The performances of Amitabh Bachchan and Fahadh Faasil also garnered praise, as did the film’s exploration of a relevant social issue edtech app scams.
At present, the film has earned an 8.5/10 rating on IMDb, and its streaming rights have been acquired by Amazon Prime Video. Directed by TJ Gnanavel, Vettaiyan tells the gripping story of Kanyakumari SP Athiyan, whose investigation into a drug case exposes a deeper conspiracy that challenges both his personal and professional life. Alongside Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan, the film features a stellar cast, including Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, and Dushara Vijayan.
Vettaiyan was released in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada, on October 10, and continues to gather momentum at the box office.
