Rajinikanth’s latest film Vettaiyan is off to a roaring start at the box office, amassing an impressive ₹55.5 crore in its first two days of release. On its opening day, the film collected ₹31.7 crore, followed by ₹23.8 crore on day two, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. The film’s performance is particularly strong in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where it has grossed ₹49.1 crore in just two days. With the weekend ahead, Vettaiyan is poised to surpass the ₹70 crore mark in domestic earnings.
In terms of regional performance, Vettaiyan recorded high occupancy rates, especially in Chennai, which saw 72.50% occupancy across 1,042 shows. Tamil Nadu registered an overall occupancy of 58.53%, while Bengaluru, with 455 shows, maintained 44.50% occupancy. These numbers reflect the enthusiastic reception of the film, particularly in its core markets.
In comparison to other major 2024 Tamil releases, Vettaiyan has already outperformed the two-day collections of Indian 2, which earned ₹43.8 crore. However, the year’s biggest Tamil hit so far has been Vijay’s GOAT, which collected around ₹70 crore in its first two days. Vettaiyan is quickly catching up and is expected to make a significant mark over the weekend.
This marks Rajinikanth’s first release after the massive success of Jailer, which grossed ₹650 crore worldwide. Directed by TJ Gnanavel, Vettaiyan is a hard-hitting cop drama that tackles themes like encounter killings and corruption in the education sector. The film also features an ensemble cast, including Amitabh Bachchan in his Tamil film debut, Manju Warrier, Fahadh Faasil, Kishore, Ritika Singh, and Rana Daggubati.
Despite facing competition in northern India from Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video and Alia Bhatt’s Jigra, Vettaiyan has managed to carve out a strong presence in its primary market, and Rajinikanth’s star power continues to draw audiences in large numbers.
