Alia Bhatt and Sharvari’s much talked about spy thriller Alpha is finally arriving on OTT, giving viewers another chance to watch the film from home. The movie, which made history as the first female led film in the YRF Spy Universe, will begin streaming on Netflix from August 28. Netflix confirmed the digital release on August 27 with a post inviting fans to join the Alpha gang. The platform wrote, “Get ready to join the Alpha gang ❤️🔥Watch Alpha, out 28 August, on Netflix!” The announcement comes nearly two months after the film opened in theatres on July 3, 2026.
Directed by Shiv Rawail, Alpha features Alia Bhatt and Sharvari in the lead roles as R&AW agents caught in a dangerous mission. Alia plays Sita, a highly trained agent who is being prepared to become an Alpha soldier. Sharvari plays Durga Kaul, Sita’s estranged fraternal twin. Their characters are connected to a much larger conspiracy, bringing the film into the expanding world of the YRF Spy Universe.
Bobby Deol plays the main villain, Colonel Fateh Singh Lakhawat. His character conducts experiments using a powerful serum called Alpha, which becomes an important part of the story. Sita is kidnapped and brought under his control before eventually being transformed into a super soldier. The official plot describes a young woman driven by revenge who destroys anyone standing in her way, only to discover hidden truths about her own past and identity.
Despite being a major release from one of Bollywood’s biggest action franchises, Alpha had a modest theatrical run. The film was reportedly made on a budget of ₹100 crore and earned around ₹58.86 crore net in India. It collected approximately ₹29.05 crore from overseas markets, taking its worldwide gross to ₹99.10 crore. The film finished as the eighth highest grossing Bollywood movie of 2026 and became the lowest grossing film in the YRF Spy Universe so far.
Alpha is the seventh film in the franchise, which began with Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger in 2012. The universe later expanded with Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, Tiger 3 and War 2. The film received a mixed response, with some viewers appreciating its action and scale while others felt that the emotional side and story did not connect strongly enough.
A Hindustan Times review described Alpha as neither the disaster predicted by its critics nor the major reinvention the franchise needed. The review called it a technically well made but emotionally weak film, with a few memorable moments, particularly involving Hrithik Roshan.
With its Netflix release, Alpha now gets a fresh opportunity to reach audiences who may have skipped the theatrical release or want to revisit the YRF Spy Universe from home.
