Steven Quale, the director of Final Destination 5, Into the Storm, Superfire, Aliens of the Deep and American Renegades, takes audiences into the world of supernatural horror with Black Box. The film is based on the short film Vessel and features a screenplay by Stephen Susco, known for films including The Grudge, The Grudge 2, Texas Chainsaw 3D, Unfriended: Dark Web and Hell Fest. Black Box was released on VOD on July 7, 2026.
The story revolves around Vero Airlines Flight 298, which is travelling from New Orleans to Seattle. What begins as an ordinary domestic flight soon turns into a terrifying experience when passengers encounter strange and unexplained events. The official story asks a simple but disturbing question, “What happened to Flight 298?”
As the flight continues, the passengers find themselves facing situations that are difficult to understand. Strange technological problems begin to appear, while supernatural events become more frequent. The film also brings alien influences into the story, creating a mix of science fiction, horror and suspense.
The passengers are forced to work together as they try to survive. Their experience becomes increasingly frightening as the difference between reality and nightmare starts to disappear. Instead of dealing with normal problems during a flight, they are suddenly fighting against forces that they cannot easily explain.
Black Box has a strong horror background behind the camera. Steven Quale previously directed Final Destination 5 and Into the Storm, while Stephen Susco worked on several well known horror films. Their latest collaboration brings supernatural elements and science fiction together inside the limited space of an aircraft.
The film also has an interesting connection to the Duffer Brothers, the creators of Stranger Things. Black Box expands on the concept of the 2012 short film Vessel, which was directed by Clark Baker. The short film’s script was written by Ross Duffer and Matt Duffer before they became widely known for Stranger Things.
The film stars Tom Brittney, Kaja Chan, Hanneke Talbot, Molly Belle Wright, Georgina Leonidas, Weronika Rosati, Ceallach Spellman, Danny Mac and others.
