Netflix has released the trailer of Chumbak, a new family comedy series set in a lively urban Indian neighbourhood. The series follows five families whose lives are so closely connected that their neighbours feel more like family members. A small issue in one home can quickly become a matter of concern for the entire neighbourhood.
The series comes from Hats Off Production, the team behind popular comedy shows such as Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Khichdi. Chumbak is written and directed by Aatish Kapadia and produced by Jamnadas JD Majethia and Aatish Kapadia.
The trailer introduces viewers to a group of families with very different personalities. However, their relationships and everyday problems create situations that are familiar to anyone who has lived in a close neighbourhood.
Mickey and Twinkle Oberoi, played by Arjun Bijlani and Helly Shah, are a romantic couple who seem to live in their own happy world. Aditya and Priyanka Khanna, played by Sumeet Vyas and Manasi Parekh, appear to have a calm relationship, although their home life is not always as peaceful as it looks.
The Taraporewala family includes Mumma Gulshan, Freddy and Hutoxi, played by Delnaaz Irani, Anant V. Joshi and Amyra Dastur. Their family interactions bring another layer of humour to the story.
Rajni and Kuku Merchant, played by Neena Gupta and Deven Bhojani, are often seen arguing but remain deeply attached to each other. Meanwhile, Dharmendra and Kiran Kejriwal, played by Sumeet Raghvan and Sandeepa Dhar, have a relationship that brings its own unusual situations.
The story focuses on familiar topics such as family arguments, marriage, parenting, celebrations and neighbourhood gossip. The comedy comes from ordinary situations that quickly become bigger because everyone wants to know what is happening.
The cast also includes Atul Kumar along with Neena Gupta, Deven Bhojani, Sumeet Raghvan, Sandeepa Dhar, Arjun Bijlani, Helly Shah, Sumeet Vyas, Manasi Parekh, Delnaaz Irani, Anant V. Joshi and Amyra Dastur.
Chumbak premieres September 10 on Netflix.
