Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for La Bola Negra, also known as The Black Ball, giving viewers their first look at the Spanish film that has already received major recognition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The film was directed, co written and produced by Spanish filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, who are popularly known as Los Javis. The duo won the Best Director award at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, while La Bola Negra was also nominated for the Palme d’Or.
The story covers nearly a century of Spanish history and follows three generations of men whose lives become connected through desire, pain and love. Rather than taking place in a single period, the film moves between three different years: 1932, 1937 and 2017.
Each period brings a different part of the story, while the connections between the characters gradually link the different generations. The film looks at how personal relationships and difficult experiences can continue to affect people and their families across different periods of history.
Spanish music artist Guitarricadelafuente makes his acting debut in La Bola Negra. He stars alongside Miguel Bernardeau, who is known internationally for his role in Elite. Their performances form part of a larger ensemble cast featuring several well known names from Spain and Hollywood.
The cast includes Penélope Cruz, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres and Glenn Close. The combination of Spanish and international performers adds to the film’s wide ranging cast.
