Netflix has announced that Plastic Beauty will premiere globally on September 17. The streaming platform has also released the teaser trailer for the upcoming Japanese series and revealed 23 additional cast members who will join leads Mayu Matsuoka and Riisa Naka. The series is set against the growing discussion around beauty standards in Japan. While attitudes towards different appearances are slowly changing, cosmetic surgery remains a major and rapidly growing industry. Plastic Beauty looks at this world through the people who work in it and those who turn to surgery in the hope of changing their appearance and lives.
The story follows Fumi Numata, played by Mayu Matsuoka, known for Shoplifters. Fumi is a talented surgeon who is forced to leave her hospital after an emergency operation. She later joins the cosmetic surgery clinic run by Rin Tohyama, played by Riisa Naka, known for Alice in Borderland.
Rin is a well known cosmetic surgeon who believes that beauty can help people heal and regain confidence. However, Fumi joins her clinic with a different purpose. She wants to uncover the darker side of the cosmetic surgery industry. Their opposing views soon create tension between the two doctors.
The newly announced cast adds several important characters to the story. Shotaro Mamiya plays Rui Komiya, the clinic’s vice director, while Minami Tanaka portrays head nurse Nanami Todoroki. Hiromi Nagasaku plays Fumi’s mother, Taeko Numata, and Atsuro Watabe appears as Arata Tohyama, an influential figure in the cosmetic surgery industry.
The additional cast includes Riku Hagiwara, Mijika Nagai, Daichi Watanabe, Reiji, Kavka Shishido, Yu Shirota, Naosumi Masuko, Sosei Takeda, Rika Izumi, Kentaro Tamura, Eisuke Sasai, Hana Amano, Hina Kagei, Naoko Ken, Kayo Noro, Rin Furukawa, Yumi Adachi, Shunsuke Kazama and Kōki.
The teaser focuses on people who want to change themselves and the emotional reasons behind those decisions. It also highlights the growing conflict between Fumi and Rin as their different beliefs about medicine, beauty and healing come into focus.
Plastic Beauty will premiere globally on September 17, only on Netflix.
