Netflix has released the first trailer for Possible Love, the upcoming South Korean film from acclaimed director Lee Chang dong. The movie marks his return to feature filmmaking after his 2018 drama Burning and will premiere in the Competition section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, where it will compete for the Golden Lion.
The film stars Jeon Do yeon, Sul Kyung gu, Zo In sung and Cho Yeo jeong in the lead roles. The story follows two married couples whose lives become closely connected through a documentary project.
Jeon Do yeon plays Mi ok, who is married to Ho seok, portrayed by Sul Kyung gu. The couple belongs to a working class background, and their situation becomes more difficult after Ho seok loses his job.
Meanwhile, Cho Yeo jeong plays Ye ji, a documentary filmmaker who decides to make a film about people who have lost their jobs. Her project brings her into contact with Mi ok and Ho seok.
Ye ji is married to Sang woo, played by Zo In sung. Unlike Ho seok and Mi ok, Sang woo comes from a much wealthier background. As the documentary takes shape, the two couples become increasingly involved in each other’s lives.
The trailer begins with what appears to be a normal summer getaway. However, the peaceful setting gradually gives way to tension as personal problems and hidden feelings begin to surface. The four characters are forced to deal with issues involving their relationships, financial situations and different views about life.
At the centre of Possible Love is the question of what people are willing to do to protect the relationships that matter to them. The film also looks at how money, social class and job insecurity can affect love and marriage.
The project also brings Lee Chang dong back together with Jeon Do yeon, following their acclaimed collaboration on Secret Sunshine. Jeon won the Cannes Best Actress award for her performance in the 2007 film.
Possible Love will release in South Korea on September 23, followed by a limited international theatrical release on October 23.
