Nicolas Cage’s Spider Noir has officially come to an end after just one season. Prime Video and MGM+ have cancelled the live action Marvel series, meaning the show will not return for a second season.
The series starred Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a private investigator living in New York during the Great Depression. Unlike the usual superhero stories set in the present day, Spider Noir took viewers back to a darker period in American history and followed a different version of the Spider Man character.
The story focused on Ben Reilly, a struggling private investigator who was forced to confront his mysterious past as a superhero. The series combined crime drama elements with the superhero world, giving the familiar Marvel character a completely different setting and tone.
Spider Noir was developed for television by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who served as co showrunners. Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal were among the executive producers involved with the project.
Alongside Cage, the cast included Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson. The series was designed as the first project under Amazon’s development agreement with Sony Pictures Television to bring characters from the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters to television.
Spider Noir premiered on May 25 and appeared to attract a significant audience during its first several weeks. The show reportedly collected 2.6 billion viewing minutes during its first six weeks. It also received a 92 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned 11 Emmy nominations.
Despite these numbers and the positive response from critics, Prime Video and MGM+ have decided not to continue the series. The cancellation means viewers will only get the eight episodes released as part of the first season.
The decision is likely to come as a surprise to fans who were hoping to see more of Cage’s version of the character. Nicolas Cage had already brought a distinctive style to Spider Noir, making the series different from other live action superhero projects.
For now, fans can still watch the complete first season. Spider Noir is available to stream on Prime Video and MGM+.
