Prime Video has released the official trailer for The Love Hypothesis, an upcoming romantic comedy starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman. The film is based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel of the same name, which became widely popular after its release in 2021. The story follows Olive, played by Lili Reinhart, a talented Ph.D. student who is focused mainly on her academic career. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers that her best friend Ahn, played by Rachel Marsh, has developed feelings for Olive’s former crush Jeremy, portrayed by Nicholas Duvernay.
Wanting Ahn to believe that she has moved on, Olive makes a sudden decision. She kisses Adam Carlsen, a strict and intimidating biology professor played by Tom Bateman. What starts as an impulsive moment soon develops into an unusual arrangement between the two.
Olive and Adam decide to pretend that they are dating. They set certain rules and boundaries for their fake relationship, believing that the arrangement will help them achieve what they want without creating real romantic complications.
The trailer shows the pair trying to maintain their pretend relationship while dealing with the awkward situations that come with it. Adam explains their arrangement by saying, “I accept your proposal to deceive your friend into believing that I’m your love interest,” to which Olive responds, “Sounds really bad when you put it like that.”
However, their plan becomes more complicated as they spend more time together. The two gradually begin developing genuine feelings, making it harder for them to separate their real emotions from the relationship they originally agreed to fake.
Olive eventually faces what becomes her biggest personal question yet. She must decide whether taking a chance on love is worth stepping outside the carefully planned life she has built around her studies and career.
The film is directed by Claire Scanlon from a screenplay by Sarah Rothschild. Elizabeth Cantillon is producing under her Cantillon Company banner for Amazon MGM Studios and MRC. Laura Karpman has composed the music.
The supporting cast includes Jaboukie Young White, Arty Froushan, Laura Paolillo and Jeananne Goossen.
The Love Hypothesis premieres on September 23, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video.
