Veteran actor Chiranjeevi has drawn criticism for a remark he made about his son, Ram Charan, and the preference for a male heir. While speaking at the Brahma Anandam pre-release event, the megastar jokingly expressed his hope for a grandson to carry forward his legacy, which many netizens have called out as sexist and outdated.
Controversial Remark Sparks Debate
At the event, where Chiranjeevi was the chief guest, he quipped about feeling like a “ladies’ hostel warden” at home, surrounded by women. He further added, “I keep wishing and telling Charan, at least this time, have a boy so that our legacy continues. But his daughter is the apple of his eye… I’m scared that he might again have a girl.”

While intended as humor, his statement sparked an online debate. One X (formerly Twitter) user criticized him, writing, “Chiranjeevi is scared his son Ram Charan might have another daughter. In 2025, the obsession with a male heir continues. Disappointing, but not surprising.” Many users echoed similar sentiments, calling out the societal pressure for male children.
A Proud Grandfather Despite Controversy
Chiranjeevi became a grandfather when Ram Charan and Upasana welcomed their daughter on June 20, 2023. At the time, he expressed his happiness on social media, writing, “Welcome, Little Mega Princess! You have spread cheer among the Mega Family of millions on your arrival.”
The megastar has two daughters, Sreeja and Sushmita Konidela, both of whom have children. Sreeja has two daughters, Navishka and Nivrati, while Sushmita is a mother to Samara and Samhitha.
Despite the backlash, Chiranjeevi has not responded to the criticism. However, the incident has reignited conversations about gender bias and societal expectations in India.
